In two months' time we will once again be celebrating Christmas with family and friends. This year African Heritage can help to make life a bit easier over the festive season.

Most of us would rather have a braai on Christmas day than cook a hot meal in an even hotter kitchen. That’s why you need to order you rump and sirloin steaks well in advance, so that Norman can ensure that the best cuts are “ripened” and ready for you to enjoy at Christmas time. Call 9246 7444 to place your order.

Some of you may have noticed that we now regularly feature trays with plump, juicy oxtail cuts. Although oxtail stew is traditionally considered a winter dish, South Africans love a potjie, and oxtail is the ideal meat for a superb potjie at any time of the year.

New tablecloths to be available soon
A selection of Christmas-themed tablecloths will soon be available in our shops.

Gifts: If you are looking for the perfect Christmas gift, you need to look no further. Apart from the biscuits and biltong, which are always welcome gifts, we also stock beautiful jewellery, lots of African curios, gorgeous soapstone bowls, books, CDs, and DVDs.

Hot take-aways on Fridays and Saturdays
Friday night is vetkoek-and-mince night. Phone ahead to place your order, and pick up your hot vetkoek on the way home from work. You can ask to have the vetkoek wrapped separately, and the mince placed in a separate container, if you wish.

We bake a fresh batch of vetkoek on the Saturday morning (there are no stale left-overs from a previous day’s batch). Order it with mince, or try a sweet vetkoek with butter and delectable Lyle’s golden syrup (which we also stock).

At $5 each (for vetkoek and mince) this must be the best value for money take-away in town.

We are delighted to report that the few isolated hiccups with our chicken and lamb curries have been sorted out. We have now standardised the recipes, and therefore every batch should produce the same high-quality, genuine Durban-curry taste.

Coffee corner in our Clarkson shop
We are cautiously optimistic that we shall have a coffee shop up and running in our Clarkson shop before Christmas. After a lengthy run-around to comply with City Council regulations, we shall soon be able to provide hot take-aways at Clarkson, too.

Since we opened our first African Heritage shop in July 2009, we have set out to foster a community spirit. The new Clarkson coffee corner will create new opportunities for our customers to get together in a lovely, sunny space, free of charge.

We therefore invite you to make use of this space to host get-togethers with your friends and colleagues. You can arrange meetings, book club get-togethers, workshops, swap meets, and other social functions, and all you need to do is book well in advance to reserve a time. Please mention any catering requirements you may have for the day, so that we can ensure we have enough stock of koeksisters, lemon meringues, or whatever else you might require.

Stacks of new DVDs and CDs are now in stock
Newly arrived is the long awaited Leon Schuster DVD, Schuks Tshababala’s Survival Guide to South Africa. The film was created to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was held in South Africa.

Schuks Tshabalala (Leon Schuster) and Shorty (Alfred Ntombela) produced this survival guide to assist tourists attending the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They introduce a group of tourists from Germany, Ireland, Greece, China, France, India and The Netherlands to life in South Africa – as “re-imagined” by Tshabalala and Shorty.

This would make a great Christmas gift.

You can watch a short extract from the DVD.

New stock expected by the end of October
We constantly receive small quantities of new stock, but the mother lode is expected to arrive within a week or two. We will keep you posted.

Until next month
